Accessing track 0 of a CD

Last modified: Sun Jun 2 10:52:34 EDT 2019

Problem:  You have a CD with a "hidden track" in the pregap of track 1, a.k.a. track 0, and you want to access it on the computer.

The command to rip track 0 is cdparanoia -w 0.  If that doesn't work and furthermore causes nasty messages to appear in the system log, then you've been screwed by firmware.  Some optical drives, such as the Samsung SH-W162Z DVD burner, go into failure mode when you try to access track 0.  Others, such as the Samsung SW-252B CD burner, have no problem with it.
